No Such Thing As a Bad Kid
Understanding and Responding to At-Risk Children & Youth Using Strength-Based Theories and Practices
A Training the Trainer’s Course
Who Should Attend: Residential and foster care supervisors/trainers and senior workers; school personnel (regular and special ed); mentoring leadership; and juvenile justice professionals.
Course Content: This two-day seminar will cover: The power of a positive attitude; strength-based communication principles; techniques - including reframing, the creative use of metaphors, solution focused communication, and de-escalation techniques; self-esteem building & activities for at-risk children and youth; how to help inflexible and explosive young people; what every teacher or child welfare professional should know about developmental psychology; enhancing empathy for traumatized children and youth; why, how, and when to use incentive plans; the importance of controlling personal emotions; being proactive – the art of preventing problem behavior; how to take humor seriously; respectful limit setting; and a host of creative cognitive behavioral strategies.
The second half is devoted to presenting a host of strength-based orientation and training strategies that will help participants bring back the material to their settings and teach and model it in a sustained, systemic manner. Participants will be given training exercises, learning games, visual cues, quizzes, feedback forms, original orientation material and much more to enhance their role as trainers.
Participants will receive: Charlie’s 150+ page Trainer’s Manual, a copy of two of his books: No Such Thing As a Bad Kid – Understanding and Responding to the Challenging Behavior of Troubled Children and Youth, and The Gus Chronicles - Reflections From an Abused Kid. Each school or program that is represented will receive a set of Charlie’s new training DVDs ($400 value).
